Another Map of Vesta

The eastern horizon around 10:00 pm as of Sunday (click to enlarge). The position of Vesta is shown with a cross. The Moon will rise later as the week goes on.

I thought this photo-realistic image might complement the charts I put up to help locating Vesta.

Nothing but cloud here, sadly

Waking at 4:30 this morning I thought I would have a crack at this one Ian. Couldn't quite manage it Naked Eye (the 1/2 moon didn't help)but it was easy with small binos. It made a distinct right angle triangle with two nearby stars.

Last night the sky was clear for the first time in weeks. Vesta is still only mag 5.8, marginal for uniaded eye viewing in dark sky sites without the Moon, and hopeless for my suburban location. By the end of the wekk, with the Moon gone and Vesta a little brighter, it should be visible to the unaided eye in dark sky sites.

In 10x 50 binoculars though, it stands out really obviously, as you said. It will be good to watch and plot over the coming weeks.
